The 30 Best Holiday Moments...Minus One

I really hate it when I lie to my readers. But that’s what I did in Thursday’s column…

Now, in my defense, I was going by a FOX press release, but I still don’t like it.

If you took my advice and watched “TV’s Funniest Holiday Moments: A Paley Center for Media Special,” you know that “WKRP in Cincinnati” was nowhere to be found. So, I’m not sure what happened between the press release and the editing of the special.

I thought the overall list, which was chosen with the help of surveys across the country by Nielsen Research, was pretty good but I thought there should have been a few older moments.

If you missed it, here were the top 30 holiday moments:

30) “Curb Your Enthusiasm”
Larry eats the cookies meant for the nativity scene.
29) “Modern Family”
Jay has trouble dealing with Colombian Christmas customs.
28) “Saturday Night Live”
Chris Farley’s Matt Foley plays a motivational Santa
27) “The Office”
Michael turns Secret Santa into Yankee Swap.
26) “30 Rock”
Jack discovers the things his mother did to give him good Christmases as a child.
25) “In Living Color”
Homey the Clown plays Santa.
24) “Family Guy”
Peter accidentally gives away the family’s gifts.
23) “Married With Children”
Al Bundy dresses as Santa.
22) “Seinfeld”
George’s dad brings back his own holiday, Festivus.
21) “The Simpsons”
The cast sings a song to the tune of “The Nutcracker Suite” since you don’t have to pay for the song rights.
20) “How I Met Your Mother”
Marshall celebrates “Slapsgiving.”
19) “Murphy Brown”
Murphy tries to prepare Thanksgiving dinner.
18) “All in the Family”
Archie doesn’t like the carolers.
17) “The Simpsons Christmas Special”
Homer trains to be a Santa to make some extra money.
16) “Roseanne”
Roseanne dresses as Santa.
15) “A Colbert Christmas”
John Stewart and Stephen Colbert sing about Hanukkah.
14) “Malcolm In the Middle”
Lois gets in a fight with a woman in the mall parking lot.
13) “Golden Girls”
Blanche brings a department store Santa home as a date.
12) “Family Ties”
Alex experiences his own “A Christmas Carol.”
11) “The Mary Tyler Moore Show”
Mr. Grant accidentally gives Mary a blank check for Christmas.
10) “Cheers”
The gang turns Thanksgiving into a foodfight.
9) “Two and a Half Men”
Alan writes the Harper family Christmas letter.
8) “Seinfeld”
Elaine accidentally shows a little something extra in her Christmas card.
7) “Frasier”
Martin goes a little overboard with the Christmas decorations.
6) “Everybody Loves Raymond”
Marie serves a tofu turkey.
5) “Home Improvement”
Tim, as usual, goes a little overboard giving the Christmas tree more power.
4) “Friends”
The Holiday Armadillo, Santa Claus and Superman pay Ross’ son, Ben, a Christmas visit.
3) “The Big Bang Theory”
Penny gives Sheldon the best Christmas present ever.
2) “The Cosby Show”
Cliff is forced to repeatedly go out to the grocery store in the rain on Thanksgiving Day.
1) “Friends”
Joey sticks his head in Monica’s turkey during “The One With All the Thanksgivings.”

So what do you guys think of the list? You know I love "Friends," but I wouldn't go with Joey's head in the turkey as the funniest moment.

Get your holiday kicked off right with one of the all-time classic Disney films tonight…

Who Will Win the Mirror Ball Trophy?

I don't watch "Dancing With the Stars," so I'm going to leave it up to you guys to tell me...

Who is going to win the mirror ball trophy?

I think we all know who should win, but is there some crazy chance that Bristol Palin could pull off the upset? If she does, will "Dancing" ever be the same?

Discuss...

Pick of the Week: Hitting the "Target" This Time

Last week, one of my favorite new shows from last season finally returned to the lineup. But instead of picking it, I went with a terribly lame episode of “How I Met Your Mother.”

In my defense, I had no idea how lame it was going to be.

So I’m making it up to everyone by making the right pick this week…

My Pick of the Week is “Human Target.”

Also in my defense, this week’s episode of “Target” is much stronger than last week’s. In the premiere, we met Ilsa Pucci (Indira Varma), who decided she wanted to finance Chance (Mark Valley) and Winston’s (Chi McBride) protection business after they saved her life.

But this week, Ilsa starts to realize what she’s gotten herself into as Chance sets out to protect the wife of a man he murdered during his assassin days. Throughout the episode, Ilsa juggles her desire to know just what she’s financing and not wanting to know how Chance and Winston get things done.

It’s the most intense episode of “Target” yet, and the always awesome Valley does a great job showing Chance’s regret over the things he’s done in his past.

But no worries, there’s also the show’s usual lightheartedness as well, courtesy of Guerrero (Jackie Earle Haley) who has gained a protégé in Ames (Janet Montgomery). Since Guerrero likes to work alone, he’s not really thrilled about having her tag along, but it provides some funny moments for us.

If you’ve never seen “Target” before, now’s a great time to jump in…

“Human Target” airs Wednesday, November 24th at 8 p.m. on FOX…

FOX's Mid-Season Moves

It looked like FOX’s mid-season schedule would be a little more stable this year, without both “24” and “American Idol” shoving aside shows from fall.

But then “Glee” became an even bigger phenomenon that it already was and FOX decided to take a chance and make a long rumored move of “American Idol” to other nights.

And that’s got the schedule all out of whack…

“American Idol” is moving to Wednesdays and Thursdays, moving “Bones” to a later time and “Fringe” to another night.

“Human Target” and “Lie to Me” are getting bumped off the schedule and/or ending their runs. And it looks like “Running Wilde” is done.

Today's Column: Let the Foodfight begin!

It's been a long time since the promos of a show got me all tingly. But every time I see the food flying around on those "Top Chef All-Stars" commercials, I get excited...

Today's "Stay Tuned" column is all about it. But I am going to have MUCH more straight from the mouths of head judge Tom Colicchio and new regular judge Anthony Bourdain as we get closer to the December 1st premiere...

As those promos say, let the foodfight begin...

Pick of the Week: A Legendary Return

“Let’s go to the mall” and build those “Sandcastles in the sand.” Robin Sparkles is back!

My Pick of the Week is “How I Met Your Mother.”

Last season when Robin (Colbie Smulders) and Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) broke up, there was a mention of a TV show she did with Alan Thicke, sending Barney on another mission. Well now Thicke is back as Barney has successfully found that show, “Space Teens.”

Nicole Scherzinger guests as Jessica Glitter, who co-starred with Robin.

You know it’s going to be legen…wait for it…dary!

“How I Met Your Mother” airs Monday, November 15th at 8 p.m. on CBS…

Today's Column: Be Sure to Put "Human Target" In Your Sights

"Psych" Review: It's Always Good to Have the Guys Back

Following a scripted show on basic cable can often be a little frustrating. Just as a season hits its groove, the show takes a break. Often the show comes back a few months later, but for just a few episodes before it’s gone again.

But if the characters are strong and the writing is solid, then it’s worth all of the starts and stops. And that is certainly the case with “Psych”…

If you’ve never watched it, “Psych” follows Shawn (James Roday) and Gus (Dule Hill), who help the Santa Barbara Police Department solve crimes through Shawn’s “psychic” skills. Of course, what the audience knows that the police don’t, is that Shawn is not psychic at all. He just has extraordinary powers of observation, which his father, Henry (Corbin Bernsen), honed all his life hoping Shawn would follow in his footsteps and become a cop. But now, Henry gets some satisfaction out of the fact that he is now in charge of any SBPD consultants—including Shawn and Gus. Rounding out the cast of characters are skeptical Head Detective Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) and his partner, Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson).

When last we left Shawn and Gus back in the summer, Shawn was dealing with his longtime feelings for Juliet, while she was trying to choose between something with Shawn and going on a lavish trip with her new boyfriend. But when the Season 5.5 premiere begins, Shawn has other things on his plate as he and Gus have a trip to make themselves. They’ve been invited to visit the dashing art thief, Despereaux (guest star Cary Elwes), in prison by Despereaux himself. Gus, as usual, is skeptical and doesn’t want to go but Shawn drags him along because he actually admires the thief and wants to find out what’s going on.

But it turns out, as usual, that Gus is right to be skeptical because Despereaux actually uses the duo to pull off the perfect crime. But when that crime turns him into a murder suspect, Despereaux actually has to turn to Shawn and Gus for help.

I’ve said it before, but it bears repeating. There is no other duo on TV with as much chemistry as Roday and Hill. It’s their rapid-fire banter that really makes this show work. At times, it can be a little too much, but in this episode it’s absolutely perfect as Hill gets off some really funny lines. And although the humor is the main component of the show, there is an actual case to be solved and the episode does a good job of helping you follow the clues along with Shawn.

But don’t worry. Shawn doesn’t forget about the Juliet situation. I don’t want to say whether you’ll like it or not because that will give away what happens. I’ll just let you guys use your own psychic powers on this one…

I have to say it’s always good to have Shawn and Gus back on TV—no matter how little they might be sticking around this time…

“Psych” premieres Wednesday, November 10th at 10 p.m. on USA…

Welcome Back, Conan!

In last week’s H-D column, I wrote that Conan O’Brien’s return to late night TV would be triumphant.

I think that might’ve been one of the biggest understatements I’ve ever written…

Last night, Conan returned to the late night stage in hilarious fashion taking shots at NBC while also jokingly taking shots at basic cable. His taped open was hysterical and his monologue was bitingly hilarious. I actually applauded at one of his shots at NBC.

And it was nice to hear him acknowledge that his Internet fanbase helped get him back on TV…

Yes, I am a Jay Leno fan. But I have always been a Conan fan as well. I just didn’t think he should be the host of “The Tonight Show. And I think the first night of “Conan” proved that. He belongs as the host of his own show where he can do things his way.

This is the Conan we love and it’s great to have him back…

You can watch his monologue here…

Conan Beats Leno and Letterman

The numbers are in, and it should come as no surprise to anyone that the premiere of “Conan” trounced “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “The Late Show with David Letterman” in the ratings.

“The Hollywood Reporter” is reporting that “Conan” had 4.2 million viewers. 3.3 million of those were adults 18-49.

“Tonight” had 3.5 million viewers with only 950,000 in the 18-49 demo. “Letterman” had 3.4 million viewers, and 1.3 million 18-49.

Interestingly, the TBS press release said nothing about beating the competition, but only praised the show’s success with young viewers. I guess they’re taking the high road, and more power to them for doing so. I'm pretty confident they won't make the same mistake NBC did and declare him the "New King of Late Night" after one show...

If you missed the “Conan” open last night, here it is again. I’ll have MUCH more later tonight…

Jamie Oliver Faces Stiff Opposition in His "Revolution"

E! Online is reporting that Jamie Oliver is facing some serious opposition to his second season of “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution”…

According to the website, Oliver’s plan was to do the same thing in L.A. schools that he did in Huntington schools. But executive producer Ryan Seacrest (who works for E!) received a letter from the Los Angeles Unified School District that basically said thanks but no thanks.

E! quoted the letter saying, “While we appreciate your interest in our school meal program, we believe our direct work with nutrition experts, health advocates, the community, schools and students is the most effective strategy for our continued success and improvement.”

The Los Angeles Times” goes more in-depth and interestingly quotes Melissa Infusino, the director of partnerships in the L.A. Unified superintendent's office, as saying she got “no comment” from Huntington officials when she asked them about their experience.

Hmmm…

E! says the show is now scrambling for a backup location.

Stay Tuned…

Pick of the Week: An All-Time Fave Makes a Special Sweeps Appearance

This week’s Pick was VERY easy since one my all-time favorite stars is making a special sweeps appearance…

My Pick of the Week is “The Good Wife.”

The star making the appearance is Michael J. Fox. As I write this, I am watching “Back to the Future” for the billionth time. I can never get enough of MJF’s boyish enthusiasm and great comic timing.

Both of those are still intact these days, they’re just a little dulled. But this appearance should give Fox a real chance to shine as he’s playing a lawyer with a neurological disorder. And not only does he have a disorder, he actually uses it to gain sympathy with the jury.

“The Good Wife” airs Tuesday, November 9th at 10 p.m. on CBS…

A Chilean Miner Steals "Letterman"

I just had to post this. This is Chilean miner Edward Pena on last night's "Late Show with David Letterman."

He's in town to run the New York Marathon, but I think maybe he should take some meetings with some network people...

Bravo Expands Its Horizons

Here are both parts of the episode from 1979.

Happy Birthday, "Days of Our Lives"!

When I was a kid, I used to stay with my grandmother occasionally during the summer. Granny only had one TV and you had to watch what she wanted to watch. And during the afternoons, that meant her stories—“Days of Our Lives” and “Another World.”

Now for some reason, I didn’t like “Another World,” (which is ironic considering it would later become one of my all-time favorite shows). But “Days” hooked me instantly. There was just something about the villain. His name was Stefano DiMera and I thought everything about him was super cool. They called him The Phoenix (which was cool in itself) and he had a major vendetta against the good guys in town, the Bradys.

The only problem was, I only got to see “Days” when I was at Granny’s because my dad was dead set against soaps. And my mom swore that neither she nor I were going to get addicted to soaps.

I think you know how this one turned out…

Yes, somehow, I got my mom hooked on “Days of Our Lives.” And over the years, we would get hooked on “Another World,” “Santa Barbara,” “Search for Tomorrow” and even “Generations.” But “Days” was the one that opened the door.

Monday, “Days” turns 45 years old—a true achievement in this day and age with cancellation looming around every corner. Sadly, there are no original cast members to celebrate the occasion, but there are plenty of longtime ones to share the event with us.

And one of those is that original villain that first captured my heart—Joseph Mascolo as Stefano DiMera (What can I say? I’ve always liked the bad guys best.). Over the years they’ve screwed up Stefano pretty royally, but these days I think he’s back on track. To be honest, I haven’t watched “Days” regularly since all the Salem Stalker victims were revealed to still be alive in the biggest copout in daytime history (I thought Marlena as the killer was rather ingenious.). My heart just wasn’t in it anymore. But I still keep track through “Soap Opera Digest” and other sources. And I drop in occasionally when I know something big is going to happen (like Marlena and John’s pathetic goodbye).

I still can’t believe that the writers broke up Bo and Hope and re-paired him with Carly. And I can’t believe they did the buried alive trick again. But I love that John Aniston has been returned to his former glory as Victor Kiriakis. No big surprise, I always liked him too…

But my favorite character was probably the dashing Count Antony Dimera (Thaao Penghlis)—before they screwed him up. But Calliope (Arleen Sorkin) and Eugene (Jon DeLancie) were big faves too…

So now I turn to you. Who were/are your favorite characters? What are some of your favorite “Days of Our Lives” memories? You can share them by posting a comment or you can e-mail them to me at hdstaytuned@hotmail.com. You can also tweet me @TVAngela.

Here is one of my favorite moments—when John (who was still Roman at the time) saw Marlena for the first time when she returned from the dead. I wasn’t a big Roman or Marlena fan, there’s just something about this moment that I’ve always really liked.

"Who Is Hannah Montana?" DVD Review: You'll Want to Always Remember These

Sunday, a special hour-long episode of “Hannah Montana Forever” sets the stage for the show to come to an end. It’s an episode no “Hannah” fan should miss.

But you can actually see it before it airs on the new DVD, “Hannah Montana Forever: Who Is Hannah Montana?” which hit stores Tuesday.

In the episode, “I Will Always Remember You,” Miley (Miley Cyrus) tells her boyfriend, Jesse (Drew Roy), that she’s Hannah Montana. When he’s totally cool with it, she puts him back in her band so they can spend more time together. Everything’s going great until Jesse kisses Hannah on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and Jay (who appears as himself) declares them a couple. So when Jesse is seen hugging Miley, he becomes the guy who broke Hannah’s heart. And that’s a title Jesse’s not sure he can live with.

Hannah also becomes a problem when she interferes with Miley’s chances of going to college with Lilly (Emily Osment).

Both circumstances make Miley seriously consider hanging up the wig for good…

Now I don’t want to give away what happens, but it’s a pretty major moment that will totally change the course of what’s left of the show. In all honesty, it felt like this was the series finale. The show pours every ounce of emotion it can out of Miley’s decision as even Jay Leno gets in on the act. But it’s well done and might even bring a little tear to your eye.

And let’s face it. If the show was able to wring this much emotion out of this episode, what are they going to do for the finale? We had all best have some tissues ready…

The DVD doesn’t end with this special episode. It also takes us down memory lane with episodes showing us all the other memorable times when Miley told someone her secret. There’s the time she told a police officer to clear up a driver’s license mix-up, and her confessions to Jackson’s girlfriend, Sienna (Tammin Sursock), Jake (Cody Linley) and Oliver (Mitchel Musso). Plus, there’s her confession to Lilly in the very first episode that started it all. The episodes go in reverse order on the DVD, probably to avoid shocking us at just how much Miley Cyrus has grown up over the years. But it’s obvious from her first moment on screen that she had star written all over her. Thankfully, Osment has grown up a lot too. If you’ve never seen it, I think you’ll be a little surprised at just how annoying she comes off in the pilot.

The episodes are a good capsule of “Hannah” and, again, get you ready for that inevitable ending…

The bonus feature on the DVD is a sneak peek at “Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure,” the new movie starring Ashley Tisdale in her “High School Musical” role as Sharpay Evans. Sharpay is trying to make it big on Broadway, but she’s finding it’s not as easy as it seems. I’m excited that Tisdale has not left her Disney roots, but I’m not sure Sharpay can hold my attention without Ryan (Lucas Grabeel). I guess we’ll see this Spring.

If you’re a Disney Channel fan, I also recommend you watching the feature that explains Blu-Ray discs (If you haven’t already seen it on another DVD.). Yes, it’s a commercial to get you to buy more Disney Blu-Rays, but they make it fairly clever with Dylan and Cole Sprouse from “The Suite Life on Deck.” And the real bonus is they bring back Kim Rhodes as their mother. The three of them still have really great chemistry.

With only six episodes, you might wonder if this DVD is worth the money, but I say yes because it gives you a good cross section of the entire series. And when “Hannah” is gone, you’re going to want to always remember her…

"Skating With the Stars" Cast Revealed!

Tonight, the cast of “Skating With the Stars” will be announced during the “Dancing With the Stars” results show from 8-9:30 p.m.

But if you don’t want to wait until tonight, I know who they are right now thanks to the issue of “TV Guide” that came in my mailbox today…

WARNING: If you do not want to know, stop reading now…

According to "TV Guide," they are:
Vince Neil (Motley Crue)
Sean Young
Bethenny Frankel
Rebecca Budig (“All My Children”)
Jonny Moseley (Olympic gold medal freestyle skier)
Brandon Mychal Smith (“Sonny With a Chance”)

Notice that “Skating” is following the “Dancing” formula with the bad boy, the bad/controversial girl, the reality star, the ABC soap star, the athlete and the Disney star. The “TV Guide” article says there is no older star because of the danger involved.

“Skating With the Stars” premieres Monday, November 22nd at 9 p.m. on ABC…

Conan's Show Zero: A Rip-Off?

Since it only lasted 4:50, I guess we should feel gipped by "Conan: Show Zero." Yet somehow I don't, because it was still really funny...

What Does Jay Have On You?

We are now just one week away from the premiere of “Conan” on TBS.

But before we get to Conan’s bright future, we have to take one last look at the fiasco that made all this possible.

Well, we don’t have to, but I’m certainly going to…

Thursday, a new book hits the shelves detailing the whole mess—“The War for Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy.” It’s by Bill Carter, who wrote “The Late Shift,” which detailed the last NBC late night fiasco.

“Vanity Fair” released an excerpt on its website last week and it’s GOOD. Carter’s writing reads more like a novel than it does a retelling of events. But sadly, this isn’t fiction…

I am super psyched to read this book, but I’ve already learned five things from the excerpt:

1) Conan clearly had a bad contract negotiator
If Conan had inserted a clause that his show had to be on at 11:35 p.m.—as David Letterman did with his CBS contract—none of this might have ever happened.

2) NBC truly believed that Conan would just accept the move to 12:05 a.m.

3) NBC told Jimmy Fallon’s people of their plan before they told Conan.

4) Jeff Zucker’s a bigger idiot than I thought.
He was truly furious that Conan was thinking the 12:05 proposal over. He apparently didn’t see that it was a big deal.

And here’s the doozy…

5) Jay wanted to call Conan, but NBC Universal TV Chairman Jeff Gaspin told him not to.
If this is true—and I have no reason to believe it isn’t—why in heaven’s name didn’t Jay tell Oprah that? Was he afraid to throw NBC under the bus?

The other interesting tidbit from the excerpt is the question Conan repeatedly asked NBC execs—What does Jay have on you?

For the record, he never got his answer…

You can read the excerpt here. I’ll have much more after I get my hands on the book…

When "Dancing" Ends, the "Skating" Begins

If you think “Dancing With the Stars” can get wild, I have a feeling you haven’t seen anything yet…

“Skating With the Stars” will premiere later this month. The show will pair celebrities with professional skaters. Those celebrities will be announced Tuesday, November 2nd during the “Dancing” results show (8-9:30 p.m.).

You may recall FOX attempting this a few years back with “Skating With Celebrities.” That one bombed, but I think this one might make it because of its “Dancing” connection. The celebrities they get will be the key…

“Skating With the Stars” will premiere Monday, November 22nd at 9 p.m. after part one of the “Dancing” finale.

Conan Gives Us a Sneak Peek

If you just can’t wait until next Monday night to see Conan O’Brien and the gang, Team Coco has a very special treat for you tonight…
