"Desperate Housewives": Doing the Right Thing...

Warning: This post contains details about last night’s episode of “Desperate Housewives”…

So, finally, Ian does something that actually makes me like him. And then he leaves. But of course he waited just a smidge too late to do the right thing. Isn’t that always the way…

I have to say I was a little surprised. I was looking for a big dramatic “speak now or forever hold your piece” wedding moment. I guess instead we’re going to get one of Susan’s classic screw-ups. Just as long as it doesn’t lead her to another boring guy, I’ll be fine with it…

I’m really not sure what to say about this whole Lynette thing, so I’m not going to say anything other than Kayla is such a brat. I’m SO glad the writers remembered her, she wrote sarcastically…

Thank goodness the Mrs. McCluskey situation got settled, but could someone tell me what the point was?...

And I’ve got a hunch as to where the Edie-Carlos story is going and I’m not sure if I like it…

Your thoughts?

"Grey's Anatomy": Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes?

Warning: The remainder of this post contains details about last night's episode of "Grey's Anatomy."

So, Derek and Meredith are on the rocks, the chief may not be leaving after all, George is thinking about a way to get away from Izzie and after getting blown off by Alex, Addison is off to L.A...

"Lost": That's my line...

When Hurley looked at the mysterious parachutist and said, “What?” at the end of last night’s “Lost,” I couldn’t help but laugh, because that was exactly what I was about to say…

Warning: The remainder of this post contains details about last night’s episode of “Lost.”

I only watched those last five minutes, but they were a doozy, weren’t they? When Hurley told Naomi (That’s what ABC calls her.) that he was from Oceanic Flight 815, she replied, “That’s impossible. They found the plane. There were no survivors. They were all dead.”

Spooky…

Sun learned that she only has a little while to live, and it appeared that the theory floating around that the Others wanted Sawyer and Kate to hook up so Kate could get pregnant might have some legs.

Plus, we once again felt some sympathy for Juliet, when after leaving Ben a recorded message in the station, she said, “I hate you.” Maybe she’s not such a bad guy after all…

But what I’m really curious about—though probably not enough to watch—is the question we heard in the previews: “Do you trust Jack?”

Does anyone else get a whiff of dead meat around him?...

FOX runs "Drive" off the road...

Well, it looks like I don’t need to watch those episodes of “Drive” I have on tape after all…

I stopped singing during the “24” promo (so I wouldn’t hear it) just in time to hear Don LaFontaine (the announcer) say that “24” was following a special “House,” which means “Drive” has been cancelled.

FOX had no choice. Monday’s episode had only 4.6 million viewers, which led to “24” scoring a season low.

So what happened? I would call it a case of overkill.

FOX started promoting “Drive” in January during every one of their programs. I think that people got sick of it before they even watched a single minute. I know I did…

Plus, instead of premiering it right where “Prison Break” left off, FOX waited a week which gave people a chance to start watching something else. Since “Drive” was compared to “Prison Break” quite a bit, I think it would have been wise to premiere it the very next week.

In retrospect, I’m guessing that FOX is regretting not holding off on bringing “Prison Break” back so it could help “24” fight off “Heroes”…

As for the final episodes of “Drive,” there’s no word yet on whether they will be shown on-line…

"WKRP": The Great Music Debate

You may have read on the “Herald-Dispatch” website about how Cincinnati celebrated this week’s release of “WKRP In Cincinnati” on DVD.

But not everyone is celebrating. In fact, some fans are downright angry…

It’s the great music debate. Is it worth sacrificing the original music to get the show released on DVD?

The problem is music licensing fees. When they were negotiated, they were for use on the show only. To get the same music for the DVD means new negotiations and high prices.

So, in order to get the title released without breaking the bank, generic music is substituted in place of the original track or the scene featuring the music is eliminated altogether.

For example, in “WKRP,” the Ted Nugent song that officially changes the WKRP format has been replaced by an unknown guitar-driven song. Jennifer Marlowe’s doorbell no longer plays “Fly Me to the Moon.” A conversation in which Mr. Carlson and Johnny Fever discuss Pink Floyd has been eliminated altogether in order to cut the song “Dogs.” And “Hot Blooded,” the song that Les Nessman dances to in a classic scene has been changed to a generic song.

In fact, most of the familiar songs have been either cut or replaced with generic music. Why? It’s simple economics…

According to a story in the Minneapolis “Star Tribune,” even a short music clip can cost $30,000-$40,000 to renew. If you multiply that by several songs in each of the first season’s 22 episodes, you can see the problem.

FOX, which released the DVD, may have shelled out some of the money if they were guaranteed they would recoup their investment. But after the disappointing sales of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” FOX decided they just couldn’t do it…

The first four seasons of “Moore” combined have sold about 375,000 copies total. By comparison, the first season of “My Name Is Earl” has sold 330,000 copies since September. Nearly half of the 150,000 copies of the first season of “Moore” that have been sold to date came after the price was dropped to $30. So, FOX decided they couldn’t sell “WKRP” for more than $30, therefore making the high music licensing fees financially impossible.

Die-hard fans of “WKRP,” who have been clamoring for the show’s release for years have been blasting FOX on any forum possible for what they see as ruining the show and are telling anyone they can to not buy the DVD. If their campaign works, it will probably keep FOX from not producing any further volumes.

So are they right to be so angry?

I’ve only watched two episodes on the DVD—part one of the pilot and the classic “Turkeys Away”—and although the generic music was pretty obvious, it didn’t keep me from enjoying the show.

For me, it is totally worth sacrificing the original music to have a beloved show released on DVD if the music is not key to the story. “Family Ties” was forced to cut several non-integral scenes because of music issues, but I can look over those missing scenes since it means I finally get to see those episodes again. I feel the same way about “WKRP.” It doesn’t matter to me that Johnny Fever is not playing Pink Floyd. That’s not why I enjoy the show.

Now, if we were having this discussion about another show, like “Miami Vice” for instance, where the music is almost a character in the show, I would feel differently. But in this case, I think the fans should chill out. FOX was trying to do them a favor.

Interestingly enough, “WKRP” almost didn’t get to use these songs in the first place. The original production company, MTM, balked at the cost, but producers used a loophole in the music-licensing agreement that allowed significantly lower rates for shows that were videotaped instead of filmed. As “Star Tribune” reporter Randy Salas puts it “Ironically, the DVD has the worst of both worlds—no music because of the high costs and lower-quality video because of music costs back then”…

Feel free to weigh in on this debate yourselves

"The View" will be a little less Rosie from now on...

As you've no doubt heard by now, Rosie O'Donnell is leaving "The View" in June after not being able to reach a new contract with ABC.

In a statement, O'Donnell said, “My needs for the future just didn’t dovetail with what ABC was able to offer me. This has been an amazing experience and one I wouldn’t have traded for the world.”

So what are those needs? Time to do other shows, perhaps (like the oft-mentioned "Nip/Tuck" spin-off)? Or maybe she's interested in being the host of her own show again?

There's no doubt that Rosie reinvigorated "The View"--if it ever had any vigor to begin with--and she will be sorely missed by the show, which had enjoyed a dramatic ratings increase thanks to O'Donnell's sometimes controversial contributions. I also think that O'Donnell gives "The View" its best shot ever to take home an Outstanding Talk Show Host Daytime Emmy next month.

But don't worry. I can guarantee you we haven't seen the last of Rosie O'Donnell...

"Dancing With the Stars": Billy Ray Jives On...

As I predicted, Heather and Jonathan and John and Edyta made up the bottom two. And to no one’s surprise, Heather went home. In fact, Heather even had her goodbye speech all prepared…

So that means Billy Ray survives to dance another day as next week he and Karina will have to perform two dances.

I’ve said I’m only going to watch this show until Billy Ray is voted off. I may be watching a lot longer than I had planned…

By the way, if you’re wondering what Billy Ray’s strange move was at the end of the jive, he was checking to see how badly he ripped his pants. Fortunately, he didn’t expose anything…

"CSI: Miami": Fooled Again!

In trying to get all of the Manic Monday details on my blog, I forgot to say anything about “CSI: Miami.”

I told you that Calleigh and Delko would share a kiss, because that’s what the promos insinuated, but we were “fooled again” as Calleigh only kissed him on the cheek. However, there did seem to be a major spark between the two of them…

And since Ryan is getting fired next week (according to the previews, anyway), I’ll still be taping…

"24": I'm torn...

I was torn over much of last night’s “24.” Some of the hardest stuff to take was some of the most believable. And one of the most infuriating scenes was actually a relief…

Warning: The remainder of this post contains details about last night’s episode of “24.”

The dead meat smell around Bill and Karen had become almost nauseating this year and the hammer finally fell last night. But it appears—for now—that it’s only their relationship that appears dead as Karen fired Bill to save her own hide. I almost would’ve rather seen him die than for him to leave like that, so I’m really hoping that we haven’t seen the last of him. I’m hoping that he still has his phone and he’ll hear Jack’s heartfelt voice mail and he’ll feel guilty and find a way to help Jack…

But as much as I hated to see Bill go, I have to say it was completely believable. “It’s just politics,” he told Nadia as security came to get him (What? No more red shirts?). When bad things happen, people look for someone to blame. Bill was the perfect scapegoat, even though he followed procedure in releasing Fayed. Karen had resigned earlier in the day to protect Bill, but feeling her position was now more important than ever (and after a pep talk from Tom), she chose to sacrifice his career over hers. I actually applauded when Bill hung up on her, both for Bill and James Morrison, who has been completely wasted this season…

Speaking of people who have been completely wasted, Mary Lynn Rajskub got to rise to the occasion last night as Chloe and Morris finally had it out and Chloe finally admitted that she couldn’t get over Morris helping the terrorists. It was a wonderful scene and provided that Chloe humor we’ve been missing all year. The look on Morris’ face when he realized he wouldn’t get his transfer was also priceless. But I was a little bothered by the line “The day I get jealous is the day I kill myself.” This is “24” after all…

And since this is “24,” I would appreciate a little less hanky-panky between Acting President Daniels and Lisa, his chief of staff. For some reason, that whole scene came off as creepy for me, especially when Daniels called himself “a dirty old man.” But because I really like Kari Matchett, I was again torn by these developments. I have to believe that this story is serving some greater purpose, especially since the previews show Lisa getting hot and heavy with some other guy…

I also have to believe that Nadia being named Acting Director of CTU is also going to serve some purpose as well because I’m not really seeing it now. I know that she’ll probably make a mess out of things, but is that all? And how was Division okay with Bill picking her since they were concerned about her being a Muslim just 10 or so hours ago?

But the real mess of the show is in the form of Doyle. I was kind of hoping that he would shoot Audrey to keep the exchange from happening so that Jack would have an excuse to kill him. I still can’t believe people actually think that Doyle could replace Jack. Did you see the way he manhandled that civilian when he took his car? Jack would have at least apologized.
And when Doyle screwed everything up by starting the firefight and letting Cheng get the component, I wanted to yell, “Doyle, you moron! Let Jack take care of it!” But then I remembered that Jack’s way of taking care of it was to blow himself up and I definitely don’t want that…

As I said, I was torn…

Which leads me to Audrey. I’m not even sure what to say about her because I’m not really sure what the show is up to. My second favorite Canadian, RT, had pointed out to me that there was something else wrong with her besides just trauma, and it looks like she’s totally right. But what it is, I have no idea. And how that ties in with everything I have no idea…

And where the show is going from here? I have no idea…

I sure hope the writers do…

"Heroes": Each Has Their Part to Play

You may recall a few weeks ago, I told you how the creators of “Lost” criticized the resolution of the “Save the cheerleader…save the world” story on “Heroes” for not living up to the hype…

Now we know it didn’t live up to the hype because we haven’t seen it yet…

Warning: The remainder of this post contains details about last night’s episode of “Heroes.”

“Each person has their part to play,” Linderman told Nathan as he revealed his master plan to allow New York City to be destroyed so the world could be reset by people coming together through their fear. And Nathan’s part is to be the person who leads the world through the crisis as President of the United States…

It was fascinating to me to watch how Nathan’s views changed throughout the hour. First, he thought Linderman was crazy and didn’t want any part of sacrificing his brother Peter for Linderman’s plan. Then, you could see him considering it when Peter revealed that he could survive causing the explosion. And when Peter said he thought Claire might be able to keep him from destroying New York, Nathan made his decision by sending her away until after the election—and the explosion.

But this leads me to the biggest question I had last night. If Linderman needs Nathan to become President, why did he send Jessica to kill him? The answer I eventually came to was that since Linderman had the painting, he knew that Jessica wouldn’t kill him and he used her to flush Nathan out so he could reveal his plan. But did anyone else think that painting didn’t look anything like the others? Almost like Isaac didn’t paint it?

And speaking of Isaac, his death came to pass last night, but not before he revealed his part to play—to tell everyone how to stop Sylar, which I presume he did in his last comic. But what was Sylar painting? And can he really paint the future like Isaac, or will his views be distorted?

I knew that someone was going to die last night, and I was once again concerned that it was going to be HRG. But my guy saved the day last night and has now formed an unlikely alliance with Ted and Matt to take down the company. And, of course, the tracking system is in New York. So does that mean it’s possible that the exploding man is Ted after all and not Peter? Linderman didn’t confirm Nathan’s suspicions, he just said everyone had a part to play…

And what about that Candice chick? That shape-shifting is always good for a little jolt…

In all honesty, I was a little disappointed with the episode, but there is so much promise for the future that I’m willing to give the show a pass…

And speaking of the future, we will see it in all of its disturbed glory next week in an episode I think will be key to putting all of the pieces together…

Plus, we get to see more of future Hiro and he is SERIOUSLY cool…

"Dancing With the Stars": Karina Gives Up...

So this week on "Dancing With the Stars," Karina pretty much gave up and decided to let Billy Ray Cyrus do whatever he wanted to do in the jive.

You could see the dejection on her face when she told the camera that she just had to realize that they wouldn't get good technical scores...

I thought the dance was pretty much a mess, but they still got a 21.

I also didn't like Heather's either, but the judges raved about her again...

And what was up with that band last night? Their arrangements were totally off and a few of those notes I've actually heard Sanjaya sing better...

I missed the group dance, so you guys will just have to fill me in on that part...

So since Billy Ray is once again in the bottom two, will he go home? Not this week, I don't think. I'm feeling John Ratzenberger or Heather Mills...

Thoughts on "Desperate Housewives"...

Since I did watch it last night, let me just say a few quick words about “Desperate Housewives” and then turn it over to you…

I really liked that Susan FINALLY stood up for herself and cut the damsel in distress crap. Now she just needs to kick Ian to the curb, and everything will be fine…

Loved Gaby’s speech at the press conference, but would the polls really turn around that quickly? It was still a little inappropriate for a “family values candidate,” wasn’t it? And the whole engagement thing might have been a surprise if “TV Guide” hadn’t given it away on their cover this week…

I was a little disappointed at how quickly Edie went back to Carlos, but I have to say it was completely believable. Edie has always been a woman who goes after what she wants and after seeing Gaby announce her engagement on TV, she figured she could get it…

But why, oh why, do they have to make Mrs. McCluskey out to be a murderer? Does that street really need another one? I REALLY hope there’s more to the story than that…

Your thoughts?...

Pick of the Week: The Return of Manic Monday

There’s no doubt that the biggest TV story this week is the return of “Heroes.” But unfortunately, that’s not the only thing happening as I get ready for the return of Manic Monday…

When last we left “Heroes,” Peter was about to have his head sliced open by Sylar. Nathan sold his soul to Linderman for the chance to be President, HRG was in trouble with the company and Claire met Nathan and Peter’s mother, who knew who Claire was. And, Hiro and Ando teleported into the future where they found a destroyed New York.

Everything I’ve read says that this episode will be a doozy, but there’s much more to come…

“Heroes” airs Monday at 9 p.m. on NBC…

But I’ll, of course, be taping “Heroes” since “24” is hitting its stride, just as it hits the home stretch. Jack’s out to save the woman he loves and he’s not going to let a little thing like a warrant for his arrest stand in his way…

“24” airs Monday at 9 p.m. on FOX…

And there’s a major moment on “CSI: Miami” as Calleigh and Delko share a kiss. I’m not in favor of the pairing since I’ve always thought Calleigh should hook up with Ryan, but I will be watching—or taping actually—to see how it happens…

“CSI: Miami” airs Monday at 10 p.m. on CBS…

“It’s just another Manic Monday…”

Which shows need saved?

“USA Today” last week revealed its annual “Save Our Shows” survey, which asks readers to vote on which TV shows they would like to see saved.

The survey is interesting because it gives us a good look at which shows are in trouble.

Here are the shows you can vote for by network:

ABC:
“According to Jim”
“George Lopez”
“Knights of Prosperity”“October Road”
“In Case of Emergency”
“What About Brian”

CBS
“Ghost Whisperer”
“The New Adventures of Old Christine”
“The Unit”
“Jericho”
“The Class”

FOX
“The War At Home”
“The Winner”

NBC
“Friday Night Lights”
“Law & Order”
“Law & Order: Criminal Intent”
“Crossing Jordan”
“Medium”
“Scrubs”

CW
“Gilmore Girls”
“Supernatural”
“All of Us”

Now remember that just because a show is on this list, does not mean that it will definitely be cancelled. It just means it’s being debated…

You’ll notice one show that did not make the NBC list is “Studio 60.” I’m guessing that’s because it’s generally believed to already be dead. Why they chose to exclude “Veronica Mars” from the CW list, I have no idea…

You can vote for your favorites at http://www.usatoday.com/life/default.htm...

A changing of the guard on the red carpet...

For those of you who can’t watch TV Guide Channel’s red carpet coverage because of the annoying duo of Joan and Melissa Rivers, I’ve got good news for you…

They’ve been replaced.

Beginning with the Emmys in September, Lisa Rinna will anchor TV Guide Channel’s awards coverage.
Rinna is currently getting ready to take over the role of Roxie Hart in “Chicago” on Broadway. She spent the fall on the “Dancing With the Stars” tour and she was recently nominated for a Daytime Emmy as the co-host of SOAPNet’s “Soap Talk.”

Anyone remember when she was just Billie Reed on “Days of Our Lives”?

Meanwhile, Joan Rivers released a statement that says she will tell her “true feelings and experiences as soon as we finalize our new deal.” Hmmm…

You may recall that TV Guide Channel paid big bucks for the Rivers duo in 2005 when they wooed them away from E!...

I am not happy...

Those of you who are regular readers of this blog know that I’m a big fan of “Football Night In America,” NBC’s NFL pre-game show.

The foursome of Bob Costas, Cris Collinsworth, Jerome Bettis and Sterling Sharpe had the best chemistry of any show on TV—even with Sharpe yelling at us most of the time. And when it was announced that Tiki Barber was replacing Sharpe, I figured the show would be better than ever.

Unfortunately, I was wrong…

This week, NBC named Keith Olbermann co-host of “America.” This is, no doubt, one of the incentives that kept Olbermann as the host of “Countdown” on MSNBC.

But the problem is that “America” already had a co-host—Cris Collinsworth. And according to statements from NBC, he will remain in that role, which means there are a few too many cooks in the kitchen.

Is this how NBC is rewarding Cris for his Emmy nod?

And I can’t believe Bob Costas could be too thrilled about this development…

I know I’m not…

Okay. I admit it. I found myself engrossed in tonight's episode of "Lost"...

Warning: The remainder of this post contains details about tonight's episode of "Lost."

Not because I wanted to see if Penny was the mysterious person who jumped out of the helicopter--I already knew she wasn't. I wanted to see if Desmond would sacrifice Charlie in order for his visions about Penny to come true.

Now I know what you're saying. They wouldn't kill Charlie, right? I wouldn't be too sure about that one...

I'm hearing there will be more deaths before the season is over and I've got to believe one of those will be a shocker...

I AM LIVID!!!

So before I wrote my Pick of the Week post Sunday, I checked the ABC website to make sure they hadn't changed their mind about airing the "In Case of Emergency" season finale. After all, I had been burned by ABC schedule changes before. But the show was still listed, so I made it my Pick of the Week...

So tonight, still on my Sanjaya is gone from "American Idol" high, I rewound the tape to watch it. I hit play, and there on the screen was last week's "Lost." That's right. ABC pulled the one episode "Emergency" had left to air a "Lost" repeat. I was--and still am--livid.

Upon further investigation, I realized that the decision had been made last Friday. ABC just hadn't bothered to update their website...

There has been no announcement as to whether ABC will make the season finale available on-line.

I don't know why I even bother watching ABC shows because they just screw them up and screw us over. I should've learned my lesson last year with "Commander In Chief"...

As I've said before. No one has ever accused ABC of being very bright...

If you've seen this week's promos for "Bones" and you're wondering why they're showing a re-run, it's due to this week's tragic events.

The episode scheduled to air tonight featured the discovery of a body on a college campus. Out of respect to Virginia Tech, FOX decided to postpone the episode and air a re-run instead.

"Bones" airs tonight (Wednesday) at 8 p.m. on FOX...

"Dancing With the Stars": Controversy Averted

If you missed last night’s “Dancing With the Stars” results show, we almost got our first bit of controversy…

After falling during her routine, Heather Mills ended up in the bottom two along with Clyde Drexler.

Heather had been getting extremely high scores from the judges, which I think had helped her stave off elimination since she’s not all that popular with the public (There’s that whole gold digger reputation she’s got.). But when they were forced to dock her points for the fall, that made her vulnerable.

But going home after a fall caused solely by her prosthetic leg? Controversy with a capital C, my friends…

But instead, it was Clyde who finally went home. And it was fairly obvious that Clyde wanted to go. When Heather reached over to hold his hand as they waited for the announcement, he seemed to almost blow her off like he didn’t care what happened. I think the announcement was a relief for him.

Someone who was not relieved was Billy Ray Cyrus. He almost seemed upset when it was announced that they were safe. I wonder, though, if that may have been because he thought he deserved to be in the bottom two more than Heather.

Either way, Billy Ray lives to dance again and next week he’ll have to learn two dances as the stars will perform with their partners and with the other stars in a swing dance. It should be interesting.

However, because of the return of Manic Monday, I will only be able to watch until 8:58, so I’ll need to rely on all of you to fill me in on that last half hour…

"24": Say it ain't so...

Warning: This post contains details about last night’s episode of “24.”

Last night’s “24” started out like old times, with Jack convincing Chloe to help him do something against the rules. It was nice to see after her complete lack of airtime in recent weeks.

But then the show threw in a twist. Chloe sold Jack out. I didn’t know who I was madder at—Chloe for actually going through with it (Thanks to the writers for not actually making us see it.) or Morris for making her. Either way, it proved one thing. Chloe loves Morris more than she loves Jack.

Say it ain’t so, Chloe…

But my anger quickly diminished, because without Chloe’s betrayal we would have never gotten the best scene of the season—and maybe one of the all-time best in show history.

Running out of options to save the woman he loves—the woman who risked everything to save him—Jack turned to the one person he thought could help him, President Wayne Palmer. If it had been anyone else, Wayne would have simply said no. But this was Jack Bauer, the man who had once saved his brother’s life and had brought his brother’s killer to justice. This was the man who just a few hours ago had agreed to sacrifice himself for the good of the country. Even though we had seen it in the previews, the words out of Jack’s mouth still had all the weight in the world. “Mr. President, you owe me.”

I can’t tell you how proud I am of D.B. Woodside for turning this thing around. With the best actor on TV on the other end of the phone, D.B. cranked up his performance to match, making the scene nothing short of stunning. And when Wayne realized that Jack was talking about sacrificing himself to save Audrey, his reaction was beautiful—or at least what I could see of it through the tears that were forming in my eyes.

Yeah, it was that good.

One of the other reasons I was so moved by the Jack-Wayne scene was that I knew this was going to be D.B.’s swan song. Major kudos to the writers for giving him a chance to say goodbye properly and to show everyone what a good actor he really is. Of course, that only made it harder when Wayne hit the floor on national TV after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage.

Say it ain’t so, Wayne…

And as expected, VP Daniels wanted nothing to do with Jack’s mission to save Audrey. It made sense since the mission was crazy and could possibly lead to World War III, but I was still a little dismayed that Bill didn’t even try to fight it. How many times has he seen Jack pull off the impossible?

Say it ain’t so, Bill…

There have been a lot of rumors this year that Jack will die at the end of the season and be replaced by Doyle (Ricky Schroeder). I hope last night’s episode put all of that to rest seeing as how Doyle is dumber than a rock. Did he really think that Jack wouldn’t know something was wrong? And I loved that Jack threatened Doyle by reminding him—and us—that he had killed Curtis (Seems like a lifetime ago now, doesn’t it?). I had to laugh when Doyle told Jack he couldn’t fight the White House. He’s kidding right?...

A Jack that plays by the rules? The day that’s so, will be the day “24” comes to an end…

"Dancing With the Stars": Now We Have Ourselves a Competition...

I didn’t watch all of “Dancing With the Stars” last night, but I watched enough of it to know that now we have ourselves a competition.

I’m just not sure whether Billy Ray Cyrus will get to stick around long enough to see it…

Billy Ray took the criticism of the judges pretty hard last night after they scored his and Karina’s rumba with a 17. After plugging his album (which I’m sure Disney appreciated), Billy Ray said the judges’ reaction was depressing and he shouldn’t say anymore.

So what went wrong? It was clear from the tape of them rehearsing, that Billy Ray was a little afraid to get as up close and personal with Karina as he needed to. Plus, it was clear that he didn’t have a whole lot of time to rehearse as Karina even had to go to the “Hannah Montana” set to rehearse with him—although I’m sure Disney appreciated that too.

Clyde and Elena actually got the lowest score last night with a 13, but since Clyde seems to have a Sanjaya-sized fan club, Billy Ray could be a little vulnerable tonight…

Someone else who was a little vulnerable were the favorites, Joey and Kym, who appeared to be dancing away with the whole thing. I thought they were pretty good, but Len and Carrie took off points for Joey “overperforming” and coming off a little “feminine,” so they only received a 25—which on most nights would have been the best.

But the early favorites, Laila and Maks, made a huge comeback by scoring a 28, and Apolo and Julianne scored the first perfect 30 of the season with a scintillating samba.

The unending stallfest—I mean, the results show—airs tonight at 9 on ABC…

Pick of the Week: An "Emergency" Finale

You may recall that when I first wrote about “In Case of Emergency,” I said the show’s emergency contact person should be a new writer.

Well, apparently someone listened because “Emergency” has become one of my favorite shows.

It’s not always funny, but the continuing story has somehow sucked me right in. I find myself caring about the characters that I originally said weren’t worth caring about. And lately, the show has added some great 80s music to give us that high school reunion vibe since the show is about four reunited high school classmates.

This week, the “Emergency” finale is my Pick of the Week. It’s also a momentous occasion for ABC since this is the only one of ABC’s new sitcoms allowed to finish its run—even if it was out of order.

No doubt the finale will end in a cliffhanger, but the real cliffhanger is whether or not the show will be back next season. That depends on ABC’s development slate.

But if I had to choose between “Emergency” and a show about the GEICO cavemen, I know which one I would go with…

“In Case of Emergency” airs Wednesday, April 18th at 9:30 p.m. on ABC…

"Thank God" a funny show is here...

I’ve always thought that “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” was one of the funniest shows on TV—even if ABC didn’t agree…

Though its premise is similar, “Thank God You’re Here” is no “Whose Line.” But it’s still pretty funny…

If you missed it, “Thank God” takes four performers and puts them each in a scene they know nothing about. They enter a door and hear “Thank God you’re here” and then must immediately insert themselves into the scenes. The final sketch features all four guests performing together.

Unlike “Whose Line,” though, the other players didn’t just go along with what the guest says. They make the guest conform to them—which is what produces the funniest results.

Dave Foley (“Newsradio”) serves as the judge and picks a winner to receive an award at the end of the show. David Alan Grier is the host.

As I said, the show is pretty funny. My only problem with it is the judge. I love Dave Foley, but is he really going to say anything bad about his peers?

And couldn’t someone find a new sitcom for this guy?

“Thank God You’re Here” airs two one-hour episodes tonight (Monday) beginning at 9 on NBC. The show then moves to Wednesday at 8 p.m…

Last night's "Desperate Housewives"...

I know, I’m running behind this morning, so let’s get right to it…

Warning: The remainder of this post contains details about last night’s episode of “Desperate Housewives”…

Wasn’t it nice of the writers to have Mike take his shirt off before he dove into the water to save Ian? And I knew Susan was stupid, but going to the house of the man she loved (and no doubt, still loves), in just a robe and lingerie? No wonder he kissed her…

I knew Gaby was selfish, but to make Victor jealous in the middle of his debate? That was totally wrong! I would think she’d want to be the girlfriend of the mayor. And speaking of which, if Fairview is such a small town, why is the mayoral election such a big deal?...

I’m really glad Carlos and Edie got it together, because I was going to be mad if the writers just abandoned this one. For some reason, I like this pairing. Maybe because it makes them both grow up…

So last week Lynette was annoying me, and this week it’s Tom. I know the writers are trying to introduce tension into their marriage, but do they have to do it with Tom’s constant complaining and whining? And after seeing that ending, I think Tom should keep his mouth shut. Did anyone see that coming? I certainly didn’t…

Does Sharon Osbourne Have Talent?

Earlier this year, Jerry Springer replaced Regis Philbin as the new host of “America’s Got Talent.” Now, there are more changes…

Brandy will be replaced as a judge on the show. Producers have not confirmed her replacement, but reports say that Sharon Osbourne will fill the slot.

Executive Producer Ken Warwick said the change was because Brandy didn’t show the same passion as the other two judges, Piers Morgan and David Hasselhoff, not because of her legal troubles.

“Talent,” which was created by Simon Cowell, will return to NBC this summer…

The Return of the A-Team?

Here’s one of the most disturbing items I’ve read this week.

The “Dark Horizons” Internet site is reporting that NBC is bringing back the A-Team…

According to the report, NBC has sent out casting notices for a four-hour mini-series to air next February which could lead to a new series next fall if it does well.

The premise would remain the same, but the team would be Iraq War veterans and the show would focus more on the dark side of being “soldiers of fortune.”

Plus, B.A. would now be a woman. Lil’ Kim is reportedly in talks for the role.

At least they didn’t decide to make Face a woman. That would be two classic Dirk Benedict characters changing gender (Starbuck of “Battlestar Galactica” is the other.).

But are we so out of ideas that we have to wreck classic ones?...

Is the Price Right for O'Hurley?

Here’s the latest on the race to replace Bob Barker as the host of “The Price Is Right”…

Audition tapes of all the top contenders are being shown to test audiences across the country. And those contenders include…

George Hamilton, Mark Steines (“Entertainment Tonight”), Mario Lopez, Mike Richards (“Beauty and the Geek”) and John O’Hurley.

Again, I’ll offer my opinion that the show should end with Barker. But if it has to go on, O’Hurley is the right choice. I’m really glad he got an audition after I suggested him months ago. If he gets the gig, I’d like to think I had something to do with it…

Congrats to my guy Cris...

Kudos to Cris Collinsworth for his two Sports Emmy nominations.

Collinsworth received a nomination for Sports Studio Analyst for his work on NBC’s “Football Night In America” and HBO’s “Inside the NFL” and a nomination for Sports Event Analyst for his work on the NFL Network’s game of the week.

Bob Costas received a nomination for studio host, but “Football Night In America” did not receive a nod.

Meanwhile, both James Brown and his soapbox, “The NFL Today” received nods, which I don’t quite understand…

The winners will be announced April 30th…

Goodbye and good luck, John...

I’m playing catch-up this weekend, so let me take a minute to say goodbye and good luck to John Seigenthaler.

Earlier this month, Seigenthaler signed off for the final time as the weekend anchor of “NBC Nightly News.”

Due to budget cuts, NBC decided not to renew his contract. He had been with NBC News for 11 years.

Announcing his departure, Seigenthaler thanked NBC News and his viewers. “And thanks to my dear family. Finally we have our weekends back.”

Maybe if NBC had given Seigenthaler more to do—like fill in for Brian Williams—they could’ve justified his salary. I always enjoyed watching his newscasts and he will be missed.

I hope he lands somewhere new very soon...

Some Sad News...

Some sad news to report today. Roscoe Lee Browne died Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. He was 81.

You may not recognize the name, but no doubt, you would recognize the voice. That gorgeous, refined baritone narrated the movie “Babe” and provided just the right touch to the Kingpin in 30 episodes of the FOX “Spider-Man” cartoon from 1995-1998.

Children of the 80s will recognize Browne as Dr. Barnabus Foster from the classic 1986 episode of “The Cosby Show,” “The Card Game,” in which Cliff and Dr. Foster beat Cliff’s dad and his friend at cards. The role won Browne an Emmy, and he later reprised it on a second episode of “Cosby” and four episodes of “A Different World.”

But how I will always remember Browne is as Rosemont, the enigmatic leader of the mysterious 13 on “Falcon Crest” in 1988. That storyline single-handedly ruined “Crest,” but Browne was fantastic as the villain that brought Richard Channing (David Selby) to his knees.

And I never forgot that voice because of it. He will be missed…

"Lost": More and More Questions...

I admit that because of all of the good reviews I had read I actually watched the first half-hour of “Lost” before I got bored with hearing myself ask questions and turned off the TV…

Warning: The remainder of this post contains details about last night’s episode of “Lost.”

I like Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet) and it was great to see one of my all-time faves, Brett Cullen (Goodwin), but is anyone following this? Why did Juliet agree to leave her pregnant and possibly dying sister to go to some mysterious place where she had to be drugged to go? The “you know this place is special” explanation just didn’t do it for me…

And did Jacob save Juliet's sister, or was Ben lying about the return of her cancer? And who is Jacob?

And why does this show make me ask so many questions?

Because I couldn’t help myself, I turned the TV back on to see the end. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me that the whole thing— Juliet being left by the Others, Claire’s illness, Juliet saving her—was all a scam orchestrated by Ben. It wasn’t surprising, but it was disappointing. I was really hoping that Juliet would be a victim of the Others, not one of their chief instigators.

Which leads to more questions. If she hates Ben so much and so desperately wants to leave, why is she helping him? Is this her ticket home?

And what in the world did Juliet do to earn Jack’s trust? Was it because she saved Kate?

One last question. Any thoughts?

Billy Ray learns to juggle...

Since I didn’t watch all of “Dancing With the Stars” last night, I missed the big controversy. But it got full play again tonight…

Len Goodman did some investigation into how much practice the stars were doing and discovered that for some, it wasn’t very much. In fact, one couple had only practiced six hours. Len chastised all of the couples at the beginning of the show and told them they needed to step it up, which didn’t go over very well with everyone—especially Clyde.

But it brings up a good point. In order for the show to be successful, it needs to have well-known names. But well-known names have other things on their plate and can’t devote as much time to their dancing. For example, Billy Ray has to return to the set of “Hannah Montana” this week and Monday, he has a photo shoot for his album which will be out in September.

Meanwhile Ian Ziering and Joey Fatone are…well, you get my point.

Billy Ray will have to find a way to make it work, though, as he’s through to next week.

To the surprise of no one—including Leeza—Leeza and Tony were eliminated.

And after getting the judges’ encore dance for the second week in a row, Joey and Kym are definitely the favorites.

Plus, after seeing that package about the professional dancers, I feel sorry for Ian. I thought Karina needed to chill out. Cheryl takes this WAY too seriously…

Who Is Oleg?

If you tuned into last night’s “24” (and why wouldn’t you?), you met Oleg the cab driver—not in the show, but during the commercials.

Oleg was the animated character we saw during a series of eight-second bits staggered throughout the hour.

So what’s the deal? Nielsen, the research company that compiles TV ratings, is getting ready to launch minute-by-minute commercial ratings. This means advertisers will know exactly who is watching their commercials. Therefore, the networks are looking for ways to engage the audience in the commercial breaks so that they can charge the same amount for advertising they always have.

FOX, the first of the major broadcast networks to conduct this type of experiment, will be airing more of the spots through the end of the week and then will use a similar system to Nielsen’s to measure viewer engagement.

You can read all about Oleg, his family, and his friends on a VERY elaborate website at http://www.fox.com/.

"24": "Now we're gonna have some fun"

“Now we’re gonna have some fun,” Jack told Fayed on last night’s “24” as they prepared to take Fayed to Burke, the master of chemical torture.

But considering last night’s episode, Jack might as well have been talking to all of us watching…

In all honesty, I’ve been doubting my sanity lately. After Robert Bianco’s scathing review last week and Matt Roush’s call for big changes this week, I’ve been thinking that maybe my love for “24” has been clouding my judgment about the show.

But then last night’s episode proved that Roush, Bianco and every other critic in America that has been trashing “24” this season are the ones that should be taking a second look at themselves. You’d think that after five and a half seasons they would know not to count this one out just yet…

Warning: The remainder of this post contains details about last night’s episode of “24.”

The tone of the show was set from the very beginning as President Palmer continued his nuclear strike against Fayed’s homeland. Those first 10 minutes were “24” at its finest as my heart raced as the General continued to countdown the minutes until detonation. The show got a lot of flack for this 180 degree turn of events, so I hope all of those people are eating crow this morning as the strike turned out to be a complete ruse to get the country to cooperate.

And I know that all of the magazines who trashed him are not going to print new articles about how good he is now, but I would love nothing more as D.B. Woodside was sensational last night. The truth is he’s much better as a tough guy than he is as the diplomat. And I heartily applaud the show for giving him a chance to redeem himself. As Wayne told Tom, “I’m not David and I never will be. But I’m starting to learn that who I am is not so bad.” Yes, indeed, Mr. President. Yes, indeed.

It’s funny that I’ve been complaining all season about the lack of Jack, and when we finally get an episode with plenty of Jack, I wanted to see more of Wayne…

I am SO going to cry when he dies…

And how about that final confrontation between Jack and Fayed? Clearly the show had been saving up on its violent scenes, because that was one of the most intense fights I have ever seen on the show (In fact, Adoni Maropis, who plays Fayed, had to go to the hospital during filming.). But it was awesome.

I loved Doyle's reaction as he saw all of Fayed's men that Jack singlehandedly killed. He's clearly new...

As my second favorite Canadian, RT, so astutely pointed out to me, the entire episode felt like a season finale. The racing to stop the major threat, the touchy-feeliness of some of the scenes after the crisis was averted—all are the hallmarks of a “24” season finale. But even though there are still six episodes left, this was for all intents and purposes a finale—a finale to the Fayed-nuclear bombs story, as the show clearly has other fish to fry now…

Which leads me to last night’s twist. To no one’s surprise, Audrey is alive. And again, to no one’s surprise, the Chinese are involved—although I still gasped at the site of Cheng.

Now I should tell you right here that I have never liked Audrey much (or any of Jack’s love interests, for that matter). My opinion is that Jack can sleep with anyone he wants to on his own time; but during the 24 hours he’s on our time, I just want to see him kick butt and save the world.

However, that being said, I am THRILLED that Audrey is back. Why? Because Jack is going to move heaven and earth to get her back, no matter what the cost…

Now we’re gonna have some fun…

Billy Ray Makes Karina Cry...

I've said in the past that the best part of watching Billy Ray dance on "Dancing With the Stars" is the video before the dance.

But last night's video was no fun and games as Karina's frustration with Billy Ray not being able to learn the steps caused her to go in another room where her microphone picked up the sound of her crying.

However, the tears must have worked because Billy Ray gave a pretty good performance of the paso doble (whatever that is) dressed as a bullfighter, with Karina as a flamenco dancer. They scored a 21 from the judges as Billy Ray once again earned praise for his effort. Carrie Ann Inaba said it was awkward and sexy and hot and strange all at the same time.

I'm not usually impressed with Karina's choreography, but last night's was pretty good--which is maybe why she got so frustrated.

But Karina, if by some wild chance you're reading this, CHILL OUT!

The score put Billy Ray and Karina in the middle of the pack. In the lead were Joey and Kym (who have to be the favorites), Apolo and Julianne, and Ian and Cheryl. In the bottom were Leeza and Tony, Clyde and Elena, and John and Edyta.

No worries, though, Billy Ray fans. Karina is just going to have to learn to deal with her frustration because they're not going anywhere. After her lack of fan support with her best dance last week, I think there's no doubt that Leeza is going home.

"Dancing With the Stars: The Results" airs tonight (Tuesday) at 9 p.m. on ABC. You can see a special recap at 8 p.m...

Picks of the Week: Fast-Driving Dramas You Can Sink Your Teeth Into

When a show gets hyped as much and as long as this one has, I have to make it my Pick of the Week…

Finally, FOX kicks “Drive” into gear with a two-night premiere. If you’ve missed the endless previews during every show on the network, “Drive” is the story of an illegal and mysterious cross-country car race and the people participating in it. Nathan Fillion (“Firefly”) stars. “Drive” premieres Sunday, April 15th with a two-hour episode at 8 p.m. on FOX. Another episode airs in the show’s regular timeslot Monday, April 16th at 8 p.m…

But I would be doing all of you a disservice if I didn’t also spotlight this week’s episode of “Blood Ties.” If you haven’t been watching, now is the time to jump in as the strangest love triangle on TV comes to a head. Last week, the rivalry over Vicki between good cop Mike and Henry the vampire got so intense, Henry was attacked by a jealousy demon. Now, Mike takes drastic action to get rid of Henry with some help from guest star Julian Sands (last seen as “24” baddie Bierko). “Blood Ties” airs Sunday, April 15th at 10 p.m. on Lifetime…

This week's mid-season schedule...

The mid-season replacements and early finales continue so here’s a quick look at what you need to know for this week…

After a long hiatus, “The King of Queens” returns for its ninth and final season tonight (Monday) at 9:30 p.m. on CBS. Also returning tonight is “Falcon Beach” (7 p.m., ABC Family).

Tonight also marks the premiere of the seven-episode series, “Thank God You’re Here,” in which guest stars open a door to enter an unknown scene that they must improv. Guests tonight include Bryan Cranston, Wayne Knight, Jennifer Coolidge and Joel McHale. NBC gives us back-to-back episodes beginning at 9 p.m…

Wednesday, April 11th, it’s the season finale of “Friday Night Lights” (8 p.m., NBC). Just in case, NBC doesn’t renew this one, fans won’t want to miss this episode…

Thursday, April 12th, ABC premieres its newest comedy, “Notes From the Underbelly,” which follows a couple through their first pregnancy (10 p.m.)…

Friday, April 13th, SciFi premieres “Stargate SG-1” (8 p.m.) and “Stargate: Atlantis” (9 p.m.)…

Why is Lynette so "Desperate"-ly Annoying?

It seems like forever since we got a new episode of “Desperate Housewives,” doesn’t it? But we finally got one last night and there were some interesting moments…

Warning: The remainder of this post contains details about last night’s episode of “Desperate Housewives.”

The most interesting is the new pairing of Carlos and Edie. I actually think it makes a lot of sense and it’s nice to see two of the most shallow people on the show actually have a little depth. But no doubt Gaby will not be happy about it, especially since we were led to believe last night that she and Edie are now pals…

Although Gaby has got her hands full with her own guy. I have always thought John Slattery (Victor) was sexy, so I’m finding it a little hard to believe that Gaby is able to resist him so easily…

But my biggest concern about the episode is Lynette. When did she become so unbelievably annoying? Every time you turn around she’s using someone to get something only she wants. It’s just an orange t-shirt, Lynette. Get over yourself!

Next week, Jason Gedrick will guest star as a new employee at the Pizzeria that will apparently make things a little more interesting for Lynette—especially since Tom is out for so long. I love Jason Gedrick, but the idea of Lynette cheating on Tom (or even thinking about it) is more than I can take…

Is Felicity Huffman being punished for her success or something?...

"So let it be written. So let it be done."

For as long as I can remember, I have had an Easter Sunday tradition—sitting in front of the TV and watching “The Ten Commandments.”

As a kid, I rarely got to see the end since it ran so late and I had to time my bath around my favorite parts.

Now I’m an adult (at least some of the time), and “Commandments” is shown on Saturday; but I’m still right there watching, this time, right to the end. And you should be too.

Yes, the movie can be a little cheesy, but the epic scope of it is just staggering. And Yul Brenner is just so cool.

“The Ten Commandments” airs Saturday, March 7th at 7 p.m. on ABC…

“So let it be written. So let it be done.”

A "Desperate" Easter Sunday...

Just a reminder that Sunday’s episode of “Desperate Housewives” is all new—FINALLY!

The Low Self-Esteem of the "Lost" Creators

Some of my classmates in high school had a saying: “People who make fun have low self-esteem.”

Granted, they just said it to make fun, but the sentiment is still true. People often tear others down to make themselves look better…

Which would explain why the executive producers of “Lost,” Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, feel the need to attack other shows…

It started with the Winter Press Tour. Lindelof and Cuse were clearly stung by the critics’ and audience’s reactions to the first batch of “Lost” episodes. The fans were angry because much of the cast was MIA while the show focused on the Others. And after posing a ton of questions in the season finale, by the time “Lost” took its break, none of them—or any others—had been answered.

In the meantime, while “Lost” was off the air, another serial had become the new “it” drama. And “Heroes” didn’t wait to answer questions, moving at a breakneck pace that fans loved—and wanted a little more of on “Lost.”

So at the press tour, Cuse finally had the chance to respond to the criticism. He could’ve just explained that those first episodes were not meant to be separate from the rest and that the hiatus hurt the flow. He could’ve just said that everything would make sense later. He did say those things, but he chose to add one other comment. He chose to say that the resolution of the “Save the cheerleader, save the world” story on “Heroes” didn’t live up to all the hype.

I remember thinking when I read this, “At least they tried, pal.” But Cuse and Lindelof were not done yet…

Last week, the duo was stung by the reaction to the Paolo-Nikki episode. Fans hated these characters from the very beginning because they saw them as taking away from the characters they loved. So last week, the show solved the problem by eliminating them from the canvas.

But did Damon Lindelof simply say that they were respecting the fans’ wishes? Did he just admit they had made a mistake with these characters? No.

Instead, Lindelof took a shot at another show, telling “TV Guide”: “The easiest thing would’ve been to forget they ever happened, like the cougar on ‘24.’ But that’s not ‘Lost.’”

Forget that it ever happened? Not even last year’s five Emmys have made people forget the worst moment in “24” history…

For those of you who don’t know what Lindelof is referring to, in season two, Kim Bauer was running through the woods trying to get to safety from the nuclear bomb that was in Los Angeles, when she began being pursued by a cougar. Running away from it, she got her foot caught in a trap. A mountain man (played by Kevin Dillon of “Entourage”) rescued her and took her to his cabin, where he tried to get her to stay with him.

As my second favorite Canadian, RT, said, what did they want? For the cougar to have its own spin-off?

“24” has abandoned many storylines in its five and a half seasons, but unfortunately, the cougar was not one of them. So why would Lindelof bring up such a bad comparison?

Remember what I said about tearing down others to make yourself look better. What better way for Lindelof to do that than by bringing up the reigning Emmy winner’s worst moment?

The sad thing is that of all the shows the people from “Lost” should not attack it’s “24,” because without “24” there would be no “Lost.” Up until the success of “24,” no network would touch a serial drama like “Lost.” It’s almost as if they’re biting the hand that fed them.

I have always respected “Lost” for listening to the fans. I just wish they would come out and admit their shortcomings instead of attacking others. Or better yet, I wish they would just concentrate on their own show instead of worrying about everyone else’s…

Maybe they need a boost of self-esteem…

"30 Rock"s On...

NBC announced today that "30 Rock" will return next season.

"30 Rock" returns to the NBC line-up tomorrow (Thursday) at 8:40 p.m. with a super-sized episode guest-starring Will Arnett ("Arrested Development," "Blades of Glory").

Still no word on the fate of "Friday Night Lights"...

I'm so confused...

So yesterday, after I reported to you that “The Black Donnellys” would end its run April 16th, NBC changed its mind and pulled the plug immediately. Next week it will be replaced by “Thank God You’re Here,” the improv program that was originally scheduled to air at 9 p.m. “The Real Wedding Crashers” will start in the slot April 23rd. You can see the unaired episodes of “Donnellys” on NBC.com…

And I hesitate to even tell you anything about ABC’s schedule because they change it on an almost hourly basis, but here goes anyway. After TV critics almost universally trashed ABC’s decision to replace “October Road” with “Notes From the Underbelly,” the network has changed its mind. “Underbelly” will premiere Thursday, April 12th at 10:00 p.m. with back-to-back episodes. Then April 18th, it will move to Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m., allowing “Road” to finish its six week run. So, does this mean “Men In Trees” will come back this season after all? ABC has made no announcement yet…

ABC has also changed its mind about “In Case of Emergency,” deciding to allow the show to air all 13 of its episodes. I like this show, so I’m happy about this decision and hope they stick with it. The only problem is that because ABC had originally planned to air only 11 episodes, they started showing them out of order to get the Jane Seymour arc in before the end and now things are a little confusing (Yeah, ABC. That’s the way to get people to watch. Mess up the order of a serial comedy.). “Emergency” airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m…

Billy Ray dances on...

And I thought “American Idol” knew how to stall. Holy cow…

First, there was that somewhat inappropriate performance (for a family show) by Ciara and then there was that study of the contestants’ numbers and auras. What?!

But when they finally got around to it, Shandi and Brian were the second pair eliminated from “Dancing With the Stars.” So yes, Billy Ray dances on with his “achy breaky butt.”

The interesting story that emerged from last night’s results show, though, was Leeza Gibbons. Leeza and Tony were tied for first place after the judges’ scores, but they ended up in the bottom two after the votes were figured in. Translation: Leeza has no fans. She was not happy.

Speaking of people who were not happy, Laila Ali was still fuming over her partner, Max, coming up with illegal choreography. I don’t understand all the technicalities, but Max should have. And I’m thinking that an undefeated boxing champ is not someone you want to mess with.

Since I didn’t watch any of the dances other than Billy Ray’s Monday night, I missed Joey and Kym’s “Star Wars” tango. They got to do the encore dance last night, and it was really cool.

I’ve decided the reason I can’t get into this show is because I just don’t understand it. I can listen to a person sing and know whether it was good or not, but with dancing, I don’t have a clue. I didn’t see the big misstep Ian made and I don’t get how the other couples could break their “hold” but Laila and Max couldn’t. And Max’s point about theatrics was a good one. Everyone else was using props and costumes. They were just using their moves for theatrics instead. Of course, the judges didn’t agree.

And by the way, if you weren’t impressed with Survivor’s performance last night, you weren’t the only one. I did some snooping on the web and if their Wikipedia entry is correct, they do have a completely new lead singer…

The ax falls on four shows...

The ax has fallen on four series...

“The Wedding Bells” will air its last episode this Friday on FOX…

NBC has pulled the plug on “The Black Donnellys,” which will air for the final time on April 16th. Does this mean that “Studio 60” will return to the schedule? No. “Donnellys” will be replaced by “The Real Wedding Crashers,” a new reality show from Ashton Kutcher…

ABC has cancelled “Six Degrees” effective immediately. I’m not sure why they even bothered to bring it back…

And the CW has announced that this will be the final season of “7th Heaven.” Of course, we’ve heard that one before…

Also, if you’re looking for “The Great American Dream Vote” this week, don’t bother. After only two airings, ABC has pulled the plug. I’m so sorry, Donny…

"24": Taking a stand...

In yesterday’s “USA Today,” there was a scathing review of “24” by Robert Bianco who said that this season was shaping up to be the show’s worst day ever. His major argument was that we’ve seen so much of this stuff before—especially the Vice-Presidential coup storyline.

So I wonder if he was as surprised as I was when the storyline we’ve all seen before took a turn no one saw coming…

Once again, Jack took a backseat to the action in the White House as Vice President Daniels made his case to the Cabinet to remove the newly awake President Wayne Palmer. Meanwhile, Wayne was getting shots of adrenaline to literally stand up to the VP and reclaim his Presidency. He eventually defeated the VP, but not without some secret help from Tom Lennox, who had decided that Daniels was not what was best for the country.

“TV Guide” had said not to miss the last few minutes and apparently the promos were touting an ending you wouldn’t see coming, so I tried to figure out what was going to happen as Karen and Tom decided to bury the hatchet. Then, Tom received a phone call and dashed out of the room with a desperate “President Palmer!”

I was sure that Wayne had passed out or died, leaving VP Daniels to continue his nuclear strike. But Wayne was very much awake, and ordering the strike to continue himself. Peter MacNicol was brilliant as he conveyed Tom’s horror that the strike he had worked so hard to avert by defeating Daniels was going to happen anyway.

Now, before you all start telling me how stupid and unrealistic that is, let’s take a closer look. How would you feel if you had to stand by and listen to someone tell all of your closest friends and advisers how weak you are? What if you had to listen to months (maybe even years) of people telling you that you’re not as strong as your brother? Wouldn’t you finally say enough is enough and take some kind of action?

Granted, launching a nuclear attack on another country is probably not the best way to take a stand, but for me it’s completely believable. Plus, it’s important to note that it didn’t just come out of nowhere. Wayne had been studying the attack plan for much of the episode and his cryptic comment to Bill at CTU when Bill couldn’t give him a time estimate on breaking Fayed (“That’s exactly what I wanted to know.”) should’ve given us a clue. He knew then what he was going to do…

The best part of this twist is that it shuts up all of those TV critics (including me) who said that Wayne was too much of a wimp. D.B. Woodside, who took so much heat early in the season (again, including from me) was outstanding last night and I can’t wait to see what he does next—especially since we probably will have to say goodbye to Wayne before the season ends…

So what about Jack? Clearly the new no torture policy is in effect as he didn’t even touch Gredenko (BOO HISS!). I really don’t like Gredenko as a villain, so I hope that his final scene last night was indeed his last. But how cool was it that they met on a pier with the amusement park in the background? I know it wasn’t the same one, but tell me you didn’t feel a little “Lost Boys” vibe for the second time this season…

But the thing I can’t get out of my mind is that final preview scene. You know, the one where Jack takes a bullet and lies motionless as Doyle calls out to him? I’d tell you my initial reaction, but I’m afraid it’s unprintable…

Are the writers just toying with us? Yes, but that doesn’t mean I like it.

In fact, I think the new and improved Wayne Palmer should have a little talk with them…

"Prison Break": Why did I ever watch that show?

The girls at the salon where I get my hair cut love to talk about “Prison Break.” I try not to laugh as they excitedly discuss every ridiculous twist and turn like it was the most brilliant thing they’ve ever seen…

But I’ve got to believe that even they will be disappointed with what happened last night…

Because instead of one wild twist after another, we got an hour-long disappointment as each story was wrapped up quicker than the next with no regard for what came before it.

In other words, the writers were so busy trying to set the scene for next season that they forgot to wrap up this one…

Warning: The remainder of this post contains details about last night’s season finale of “Prison Break.”

I had always joked that season three would find everyone back in prison. I wish now I had kept my mouth shut. Personally, I think it would have made more sense to kill them all. At least we would have had some sense of closure.

Instead, the season ended with Michael in a scary Panamanian prison along with Bellick, and presumably T-Bag and Mahone. How did he get there? By taking the wrap for Mr. Kim’s murder—a murder Sarah committed. I find it interesting, though, that the Panamanian police arrested Michael for a crime they didn’t even know had been committed, since Mr. Kim’s body was in the water. And apparently there are no CSIs in Panama since Sarah would have the GSR on her hands…

And speaking of Sarah, because of the real-life pregnancy of her portrayer, Sarah Wayne Callies, she was forced to just disappear without explanation and without even trying to help the man she loved.

But as improbable as the entire Michael going to jail storyline was, it wasn’t even the worst part of the show. That award would go to the first five minutes…

There’s an expression I like to use called a “Quantum Leap” ending (It comes from the show “Quantum Leap,” when Sam would suddenly save the day in the last five minutes.) I use it to describe when a show spends entirely too much time building things up, only to give us a super quick happy ending that doesn’t always make sense.

But usually, that quick ending is given to a story that just began an hour ago. “Prison” gave us a “Quantum Leap” ending to a story we had followed for two years that had driven much of the story.

Instead of allowing Kellerman to spill all of his secrets on the stand at Sarah’s trial, we only got a handful of them. We know that he is the one that framed Lincoln, on the orders of then Vice-President Reynolds, but we have no idea why since we didn’t hear that part. We’re told that Kellerman had documentation, but what was it? We don’t know because we didn’t see it. Basically all we saw was a judge freeing Sarah (even though she helped the murderous T-Bag escape) and then a reporter telling us that Lincoln would be exonerated.

So why didn’t we hear the whole story of the conspiracy we tried to follow for two years? Honestly, I don’t think the writers knew what it was either…

But even with that, I could have been happy if the show had just ended with Lincoln, Michael and Sarah sailing off into the sunset. But with few non-“Idol” hits to speak of, FOX couldn’t let that happen. And I’m willing to bet that will cost them in the long-run…

Because there’s just nothing for the fans to stick around for. We’ve already seen Michael escape from jail once. What now? Lincoln will commit a crime to get in and bust him out? And why should we follow a new conspiracy when we didn’t get any answers to the first one?

I don’t think I’ll ever have to ask myself the question again of why am I still watching this show. After last night, the question will be, why did I ever watch that show?…

"One Shining Moment"

Here are some thoughts on last night's NCAA Championship Game...

Does Billy Packer ever shut up? Believe it or not, Billy, those of us watching at home are capable of figuring out what's going on without your help...

What is up with Billy Donovan's Eddie Munster hairstyle?...

Did anyone else think Jim Nantz looked nervous when Florida's Joakim Noah launched into his "We're going to do it up big" comments? You just know there was a not-so-nice word coming up there somewhere...

Can we PLEASE go back to just Clark Kellogg with Greg at the desk next year? Seth Davis apparently went to the Billy Packer School of Broadcasting...

And is it just me or does Luther Vandross' version of "One Shining Moment" come off as cheesy? For some reason, I just don't think that segment has the spark it used to. Didn't it used to be longer when it ran during the closing credits? Maybe it was better when they didn't make such a big deal about it...

Billy Ray "Rocks the Casbah"

Billy Ray and Karina danced the mambo to "Rock the Casbah" on last night's "Dancing With the Stars."

And after A LOT of coaching from Karina, the duo received a 21 and several compliments from the judges. You have to admit that Billy Ray's slide between Karina's legs was pretty cool...

The show ended with a four-way tie at the top between Ian and Cheryl, Joey and Kym, Heather and Jonathan and Leeza and Tony. John and Edyta and Clyde and Elena make up the bottom.

I think Billy Ray's going to have to learn another dance next week--whether he wants to or not. I'd look for John and Edyta to go home since Clyde seems to have a fan base.

And yes, you heard correctly. Survivor will perform "Eye of the Tiger" on tonight's results show.

The "Dancing With the Stars" results show airs tonight (Tuesday) at 9 p.m. on ABC...

"Prison Break": You can't turn away...

My dad is a realist when it comes to his television viewing. That’s why he gave up on “24” after season two.

So I was pretty surprised to find out that my parents were still watching “Prison Break.”

“I guess it’s like a car accident,” my mom explained. “You just can’t look away.”

I couldn’t have said it better myself…

As you know, I can get pretty frustrated with “Prison.” And that frustration nearly boiled over two weeks ago when Michael’s tattoo came back into the picture. Agent Mahone was able to deduce that a tattoo of Christ in a rose represented Christina Rose (Get it?), the name of Michael’s mother. I couldn’t believe that he needed a tattoo to remember his mother’s name. It turned out to hide a lock combination on a boat called the Christina Rose, but it was lame just the same.

It’s usually 8:30 before I start yelling at the TV, but it came much earlier that week as around 8:15, I could be heard yelling, “Why am I still watching this show?”

And then, the show pulled out one of its classic cliffhangers to remind me of the answer to the question…

Just like my mom said, you can’t not watch…

Monday’s episode was a perfect example as each moment got wilder and wilder. And I found myself asking not why I was watching, but what in the world was going on.

If you missed it, here’s a quick recap to get you ready for Monday’s season finale…

The Company apprehended T-Bag and used him to set a trap for Michael and Lincoln in Panama. Michael fell for Mahone’s fake e-mail from Sucre and showed up; but then actually ran into Sucre, who was helping Bellick to learn where Bellick stashed Maricruz. Sucre begged Michael to help Bellick get the money from T-Bag and Michael agreed. The trio was able to get the drop on The Company guys, while Lincoln (who had followed Michael) got the drop on Mahone. But T-Bag led the trio into a trap when they were left alone with a dead prostitute (that T-Bag had killed) with the police on the way. Michael, Sucre and T-Bag got away, while Bellick was apprehended by the police.

Michael and Sucre captured T-Bag and planned to turn him over to the authorities, but T-Bag stabbed Sucre, causing Michael to wreck the car they were in. Michael waved a Good Samaritan down to help Sucre while he chased down T-Bag. Michael stabbed T-Bag in his good arm, pinning him to the ground, so the authorities could find him (which they did). Michael took the money and went back to the Christina Rose. He called the hospital to get news on Sucre, but Lincoln beeped in before he could find out anything. Only Lincoln was now in handcuffs after Mahone turned the tables on him. Mahone told Michael he could have Lincoln for the money.

Meanwhile, Kellerman (Paul Adelstein in a great performance) tried to commit suicide, but his gun jammed. He called his sister, who convinced him to do the right thing. Kellerman showed up in court to testify for Sarah, just as she was about to make a deal and plead guilty…

And if you think all of that sounds crazy, I can guarantee you ain’t seen nothin’ yet…

You see, the writers never intended for the show to go beyond two seasons. But now, “Prison” has been renewed for season three, making their plans go right out the window…

So what’s next? I doubt even they know…

Which means I definitely can’t turn away now…

The season finale of “Prison Break” airs Monday, April 2nd at 8 p.m. on FOX…

DirecTV Must Be Stopped!

The first DirecTV commercials were almost cute as you tried to figure out how they got Ben Stein and Bill Paxton to look like they were actually plugging DirecTV in the middle of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Twister.”

But then, they made a “Back to the Future” ad with Christopher Lloyd, messing with one of my favorite 80s movies. And now, they’ve totally stepped over the line…

When I saw Bob Uecker doing his “just a bit outside” scene from “Major League” during the commercial break of today’s NASCAR race, I braced myself for Uecker turning to the camera to make his DirecTV pitch.

So imagine my surprise to see the pitch being made by Charlie Sheen as Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn.

“Major League” is one of my favorite movies of all time, so of course I don’t like someone messing with it just for a crappy commercial. But could someone please tell me why a guy who makes $350,000 an episode for the top-rated sitcom on TV needs to skewer one of his best loved characters in a crappy commercial?

DirecTV must be stopped!
